I'm in the process of putting together a new system that'll last me a while, but I'm having fits trying to find the right processor. I've pretty much got the rest of the system planned out and I'm to the point where I think I might as well hop on the quad core bandwagon now and save myself an already planned upgrade now. Here's the rest of my planned system:

abit IX38 quad GT
EVGA 8800GTS 512MB
OCZ titanium XTC DDR2 800 (2x2GB)
Seagate 7200.11 750GB
PC Power & Cooling 750W

I know the E8400s are out and are great overclockers, but honestly I don't really want to get a dual core now knowing that I'm going to want to upgrade to a quad later on down the road within like a year or so. The Q6600 I know overclocks very well and gets to around 3.2 to 4 Ghz on air. The Q9300 doesn' t overclock as well and has less cache, but still has a 7% performance increase when clock for clock against the Q6600. For $100 more I can get a Q9450 that has 12MB of cache, but still the same hindrance in oc'ing (might be able to get 3.2 to 3.6 out of it?).

Give me your thoughts, what do you guys think?

Well you have to remember that not only is it adding another 4MB of L2 cache, but the Q9450 is also 45nm silicone. You also have to remember that the Q6600 is basically two Conroes strapped together. So the decision basically comes down to this: Do I want a 5Ghz overclock, or do I want a more productive processor. Personally I chose productivity and went with the Q9450, its not here quite yet, so I haven't been able to battle test it, but as far as I've heard you can milk a 3.6Ghz clock without breaking a sweat.

As far as the rest of your system goes, ditch the 8800, spend the money on a 9800GTX, and I would suggest DDR2-1066 memory if your looking for overclocking.
