Exclamation Desktop Search Programs, Are They Safe?

Hi everyone,

I recently head about some search engine software giants developing 'desktop search programs' that enable you, when downloaded to make a google-like search though your files. Can these be used for 'market research purposes', i.e. start working on my files even though they are not told to do so, especially when i am online or are they just an innocent givaway for the 'needy end-users' like me? Thanks for all your feedback.

I've heard Google promises never to do that, but I'm unsure about the others. I personally removed the Google desktop search tool, because when others come over, I don't want them to have access to an index of all my IM logs, emails, documents, etc.

I personally would not trust them, even from google. The information it collects is archived, and if your computer is used by multiple users (like mine), it would be quite simple for a user to search through information on another persons login on the same computer!

Did you know that over 50% of emails that the average user receives are spam! Now if you have alot of emails, then you could search for something 50% of which would be spam. There is also the problem of passwords contained within emails, it would be quite simple to extract passwords from a desktop search.

The santy worm recently defaced hundreds of websites accross the net, using google to get to each site. A similar worm could easily be produced to extract passwords from emails using desktop search.

I personally dont think that it is worth the risk, especially when most email clients allow you to search through your emails anyway, and when you can use the find tool on your computer too!

Thanks;-)

Thanks for the info guys. I had heard about these things, but i needed to know i am not that paranoid after all. A friend of mine sent me a "tutorial" to publish on my site encouraging people to use these programs. Recommending a famous "brand" that gives out this stuff. I believe she's unaware of the risk, she even uses one of those e-mail services that allow you (after installing their program) to send out animations, personalised messages, etc voice with your e-mail. Remarkably, her husband is the webmaster of her own site.
