Shared Hosting: Good or bad?
What are the benefits of shared hosting? Surely the cost is much less than a dedicated server or co-location, but is sharing a server with others a safe thing to do if you depend on your website to earn a living?

Good Question! Hmm.... To people like me, the cost is one of the most important factors for hosting. It all depends on the host, and if you trust them or not. You also have to know what kind of people are using that server, if they spam and host sites with illegal content, you should find a new host, I would also say if you trust the host, and your site is not so big, then yes, shared hosting is fine. If it is a website like this....I am not sure. It depends on your budget, and willingness to spend as much money as a dedicated server costs. Shared hosting works for lots of people, it all depends on your comfort level with the host, and the other users on that server.

It all depends on the type of website you want to host and also the type of host you choose. If it is a small to medium size website it is much cheaper option to choose shared hosting. On the other hand, if you use a hosting company which oversells (i.e.: hosting more domains on a single server than the server is capable of) it would be a non reliable solution, with service outages/poor performance/etc.
I disagree with Solmonsk8er on the case that there are spammers and illegal content websites hosted on the same server or IP address. My experience with running a web hosting company for quite a while now, has shown that a domain can get banned but certainly not an IP address.

Shared Hosting
Yes they are good in the sense that they don't cost much (thats the good part) the bad part is that you have to share your server. Meaning if the server goes down all the " SHARED" domains will go down with it. In other words, when the server goes down all the domains on the web that use that server will go down with it. Another bad part is the that Artzweb.net mentioned.
A lot of times the support can also be low quality. For instance you might, send in a support request on lets say July 3rd, but the responce time to that maybe up to 2 weeks depending on the how many support requests there are and how much staff is on the job.
I also agree with ARTzWeb.net in the case of Solmonsk8er opinon of spammers and illegal content. So theres my opinion

Before I had my hosting company I had several shared accounts, some were horrible others were great, it really just depends on the host.

hi,
i would just like to add that shared hosting is great if do not have a huge budget and do not have a huge amount of space and B/W requirement...
you get the best of both dedicated and shared hosting.. the price is less and you get a good amount of space, bandwidth, features and relaibility (provided that the host you choose is good) are all there at a fraction of a cost of a dedicated.... also as far as setting up your content on a shared server is concerned... if the hosting company is good it will not allow illegal content to be hosted in the first place and will do everything possible to make sure that the server does not go down.. after all they are there to make a living too... a server outage affects them as well

Shared hosting is good for starters....
Most first-time web owners (who, btw, are NOT geeks for the most part) want a web presence which is affordable. They want to get their feet wet but don't want to walk out on a LOOOONG gangplank in the process. Shared hosting makes that possible. I have a shared hosting account under which I park about six domains. If any one of them takes off to the point that it's needfull I can upgrade them to their own shared hosting account at a slightly higher cost, but then they have their own control panel, email control, etc. If they grow beyond that then we can move them to a dedicated server at higher cost and commensurately higher capability/capacity. It sounds cheezy in a way, but can you say, "The first one is almost free."? Give the customer an economical way to get started. The customer always has a learning curve associated with a web site and they will always change how they want to do things as the project progresses. Make that learning curve as cheap as possible and you have provided a valuable service to your customer.

Shared web hosting is suitable for the beginners. For the websites that have not much webpages consisting mostly texts and with low traffic it is OK. Dedicated on the other hand for the webmasters who have many websites with content of many webpages, photos, graphics and databases and with high traffic/ unique visitors.

going dedicated brings in a whole new slew of issues and management. If you are making your living from it though, and it is a daily, mission critical website, then dedicated is the way to go. When shopping dedicated in a situation where you aren't ready to manage it yourself, research companies you are considering hard core, paying attention to support quality, cost, and response times. Expect to pay heavy support fees if you know minimal knowledge of linux and dedicated servers. If that all scares the hell out of you, consider going with "multiple" high quality hosting companies, and hosting your site with a backup always ready to go, using a DNS service such as simple zoneedit.com to "load balance" your site. If one ever goes down, simply change the DNS settings. This provides an extra layer of redundancy at a reasonable compromise of price.
